Our Captains

Captain Tom Ohaus – Captain Tom began fishing in the polluted waters of New Jersey just after he started walking. Since that time he has been absent without leave from the “real world” and forever present on the water somewhere. He has fished extensively in the Atlantic and Pacific, from the tropics to the Alaska. He has been running guided trips on the North Pacific for 20 years, logging over 2000 days in pursuit of salmon and halibut. He has a B.S. in Fisheries Biology from the University of Washington and will gladly talk your ears off on any subject related to our finny friends.

Captain Chuck McNamee – Captain Chuck began fishing Sitka’s waters at age 19 in 1993 as Captain Tom’s deckhand. Over the past 14 season’s he has worked his way up to his current status of captain and full partner in Angling Unlimited. Chuck brings an endless enthusiasm to the job every day along with a mid-Western friendliness and passion for sport fishing. If one word best describes Chuck, it’s confidence. He’s equipped with all the tools necessary to produce an unforgettable Alaska fishing adventure that keeps his groups coming back year after year.

Captain Chris Weiland - Captain Chris has fourteen years of fishing experience in Sitka. He joined Angling Unlimited six years ago. Chris’s combination of experience, excellent fishing instincts, and easy going nature create a great atmosphere aboard his boat. It all translates to lots of fish and lots of good fun. Chris caters to the needs of his guests and strives to make their trip an unforgettable fishing experience and relaxing vacation. Chris has a vast knowledge of the area and his techniques for catching ocean salmon and halibut are highly honed.

Captain Ben Baumann -- Captain Ben brings nine years of fishing experience in the salt water around Sitka. He spent his first three years deckhanding for Captain Tom and took the helm of his own boat six seasons back. Ben brings a great enthusiasm for his job and works his hardest to make every trip the "trip of a lifetime." Having come up through the ranks at Angling Unlimited, Ben has learned the best techniques of catching halibut, salmon, and lingcod in the Sitka saltwater wilderness. Captain Ben never stops thinking of new ways to improve the catching and the experience.

Captain Ryan Refshaw – Captain Ryan will celebrate his tenth year of fishing Sitka with Angling Unlimited in 2007. Another product of our “farm system”, he served as Captain Chuck’s deckhand for three years before becoming a captain in 2000. In 2006 he bought his own boat, “Skute”. He takes pride in keeping his boat and tackle perfect. He is a year around resident of Sitka and brings a vast knowledge of the local history, culture, and natural environment which he shares with you on daily journeys on the water. His hard work ethic, excellent fishing instincts, and friendly nature are sure to make your trip all you hoped expected, and more.

Captain Greg Mohs - Captain Greg has been with Angling Unlimited for seven years, coming up through the ranks as a deckhand and taking the helm in 2005. His hard working yet relaxed mentality allows for the guests to enjoy the ride and catch lots of fish. He is constantly learning about fishing techniques and general information of the area from his colleagues, and is ready to pass that information onto you. Rain or shine, Greg is ready to help create long lasting fishing memories in one the most beautiful places in the world.

Captain Phil Carlson – Captain Phil has been with Angling Unlimited for seven years, beginning as the fish processor for one season, then deckhand for Captain Ben for three years, and finally assuming the helm. He knows how everything is done at Angling Unlimited and he never stops working to the very best of his considerable abilities. Born in central Minnesota, he’s been fishing all his life and even earned a degree from North Dakota State University with an emphasis on fisheries. Captain Phil brings a great combination of patience, perseverance and ability to the job – every day.

Captain David Gross – Captain David (a.k.a. D.J.) is entering his first full year as a captain after working for Angling Unlimited as a deckhand since 2003. David is very hard-working with a genuine passion, nearing obsession, for catching fish. David is an avid angler and naturalist with a broad knowledge of the fish and wildlife that abound near Sitka. Driven to find and catch fish using the most effective and desirable methods, Captain David is a great addition to our line-up. He is also Angling Unlimited’s resident artist. His work hangs on the walls of our accommodations and is available for sale in our office.

Dear Tom and Staff,

Thanks for the hospitality. Everyone at home thinks I’m “ruffing it” up here. All people involved deserve a huge thanks. Your hard work makes this an incredible experience. We’ve been five years running now and can’t wait for five more.
